The Good and The Bad

Vendor The Good The Bad
Verizon Wireless
  • Excellent customer service
  • Similar coverage area to Cingular (tied for the best) in terms of places you can make or receive a call but without feature transparency.
  • Ability to force analog connection whenever you like (with analog-capable phone).
  • High speed data options.
  • Smaller native footprint in Oregon than Cingular.
  • Sprint, preferred roaming partner, does not deliver even basic features like voice mail indication and SMS text messaging, even thought you are roaming digitally.
  • No sleek antennaless phones to speak of. Most all of Verizon's phones simply look ugly and geeky to me. Note that the ugly phones may perform better than the sleeker looking phones so this can be seen as a tradeoff.
T-Mobile/
| Voicestream
  • Good urban coverage, and coverage at the central through northern Oregon coast. Where they have coverage, that coverage tends to be above average.
  • Low cost national plans.
  • Typically have lots of minutes for a low cost.
  • Sleek looking antennaless phones
  • May be best for those who need international roaming. (They may have better international roaming rates than other US GSM carriers).
  • High speed data options.
  • T-Mobile/Voicestream no longer supports analog fall-back. Even if you don't wish to chat in rural areas, you may very well need to call a tow truck.
  • Coverage is only available in larger cities and on major roadways (like Interstates).
